I Finally Tried Grocery Pickup After 50

I Finally Tried Grocery Pickup After 50

And I Have No Idea Why I Waited So Long

I did my first grocery pickup order today (Jan 5, 2026) and I HAD TO WRITE ABOUT IT!!!! It’s amazing to experience grocery pickup after turning 50.

Yes. That grocery pickup. The one everyone has been doing for years. The one my wife’s best friend has joked with me about because somehow I managed to avoid it like it required a background check and a training seminar.

I am officially no longer an Instacart rookie.

And after doing it once, I had one overwhelming thought.

Why did I wait this long.

This is the exact moment I realized I had been making life harder than it needed to be.

It was not about the app

I did not avoid grocery pickup because I could not figure it out. I did not avoid it because technology scares me. I avoided it because I already had a system.

I knew my store.
I knew my aisles.
I knew exactly where everything was.

That system worked for decades, so my brain quietly labeled grocery pickup as unnecessary. Possibly annoying. Definitely something I would get around to later.

Later turned into years.

The real reason people over 50 resist new things

For most of us, it is not fear. It is comfort.

When you have been doing something the same way for 20 or 30 years, change feels optional. Even small changes. Especially small changes.

You think:

  • This is probably more trouble than it is worth
  • I can just do it myself
  • I do not need that

Until one day you finally try it.

Then you realize the resistance was doing more work than the change ever would.

What actually happened

I ordered groceries on my phone.
I picked a time.
I drove to the store.
They loaded the groceries into my car.
I left.

That was it.

No wandering.
No impulse buys.
No checkout lines.
No forgetting one item and circling the store again.

I sat there thinking this feels like cheating.

Yes, you can also have everything delivered straight to your door for a fee. That is clearly the final boss level of convenience.

But I like at least driving somewhere. It gives me the illusion that I accomplished something that day. Plus, I saved the delivery fee and still did not have to argue with a shopping cart that refuses to go straight.

This felt like the perfect middle ground.

This is bigger than groceries

That moment flipped a switch for me.

If I waited this long to try something this simple, what else have I been quietly avoiding just because I already had a way of doing it?

And if I am doing this, I guarantee a lot of other people my age are too.

Not because they cannot learn it.
Not because they are stubborn.
But because familiarity feels safe.

A quick note if you are curious

If you have never tried grocery pickup or delivery, I finally gave Instacart a shot and it was far easier than I expected.

Right now they are offering one of those simple win win deals where you get $10 and a friend gets $10 on a first order if you use the link in the previous sentence. No pressure. Just mentioning it in case you have been quietly resisting this like I was.

This has sparked the start of a new series

I am going to start writing about things I resisted that turned out to be ridiculously easy.

Not tech tutorials.
Not lectures.
Just real experiences from someone who waited too long and finally tried it.

Things like:

  • Grocery pickup and delivery
  • Digital boarding passes
  • Mobile payment
  • Travel apps that actually reduce stress
  • Simple tools that save time and energy

If you are over 50 and have ever said I will deal with that later, this series is for you.

The takeaway

Sometimes evolution does not look like learning something complicated.

Sometimes it looks like finally trying something simple.

If there is one small thing you have been avoiding just because you are used to doing it another way, maybe this is your sign.

Try it once.

Worst case, you go back to your old system.
Best case, you wonder why you waited so long.

And if you see me in the grocery pickup lane again, mind your business. I am evolving.
